I finished this painting and realized I had accidentally painted a self-portrait. I thought I moved to Costa Rica for a different life, but somewhere in those three years living in the jungle, I was slowly unlearning one.

Life became smaller and somehow much bigger. Nature, community, my body, the ocean, the weather. Things I couldn’t control and had to learn to listen to instead. Without realizing it, old ways of moving through the world started falling away, and I began learning to trust myself.

Surfing probably taught me this most literally. You can’t force the ocean to cooperate with you. You learn to read it. When to surrender, when to wait, when to paddle, when to commit. You get knocked around. You come back up. Eventually, you stop fighting every change in the water and start trusting your ability to move through it.

The fish is emerging from one environment and trying to exist in another. The waves continue onto land because what I learned in the water had to come with me. Becoming something new doesn’t mean you immediately know how to walk in it…The gym socks are a reminder to stay silly and not take yourself, or life, too seriously!!

The eyes are about awareness. Seeing yourself clearly. Seeing the patterns underneath the patterns. My years in Costa Rica coincided with a deep dive into Jung, philosophy, the unconscious, and the uncomfortable practice of looking inward instead of constantly outward.

ALL EYES ON YOU is a reminder to look within. To pay attention to what’s happening beneath the surface, and to actually see yourself.
