So when I look at sheet music the way most people see it, black, white, rigid, fixed, something in me resists. There is so much more happening inside that structure than the page lets on.

My own scores have never been clean. They're covered in personal notes, scribbles between the staff, shorthand I developed over years of playing, and a private conversation between me and the music. Crescendo is a portrait of that. Not what sheet music looks like, but what it feels like from the inside.

The notation drifts. It echoes. Color bleeds through where black and white used to be enough. The marks have shadow and movement because music itself does. It lives in time, it builds, it shifts beneath you as you play it.

And the word Crescendo is the loudest thing on the canvas deliberately. A crescendo is a direction: get louder, build, intensify. It doesn't whisper itself into existence. By the time you arrive at a crescendo, everything before it has been accumulating, every quiet measure, every restrained bow stroke, and suddenly the music can no longer contain itself. That's the moment this painting lives in.

Interested in this work?
